Wason Ranch was founded by Major M. V. B. Wason around 1871, almost midway between Del Norte and Silverton, and before there was a town of Creede. The original Ranch House, constructed of white-washed adobe and materials found on the Ranch remains an area landmark. Four miles of the upper Rio Grande, only thirty miles downstream from its source, flow through the pastures of Wason Ranch.
The Ranch grounds provide space for many activities. There are grass volleyball or badminton courts and a competition class horseshoe "pit". Guests enjoy grilling on the outside fireplace pit. For quieter moments, there is an informal area—somewhat reminiscent of the lobby of a hotel from by-gone days. Guests play board games, ping pong or choose books or magazines from the shelves or enjoy one they've brought. Four miles of the Upper Rio Grande flow through Wason Ranch. Population studies by the Colorado Division of Wildlife consistently reflect numbers of fish in the river exceeding the standards set by the state for its designate "Gold Medal Waters." |
