Fishing Regulations

Summer
An impressive catch from the Rio Grande.Traditionally the most active season, summer brings individuals to the area to fish, hike and to enjoy the splendid Rocky Mountains. Moose, bears, elk, deer, mountain lions, eagles and mule deer in addition to Rainbow, German Brown and Brook trout and blooming alpine flowers welcome visitors.

Fourth of July in Creede is the major summer event. The Colorado State Mining Championships test miners' skills. Bleachers are filled to watch teams where one miner wields a steel hammer while another (with considerable faith) holds the "hand steel" being pounded. There is a parade in the morning and an extravaganza of light at night as spectacular fireworks shower down from the cliffs overlooking Creede.

Creede boasts the nationally acclaimed Creede Repertory Theatre, a destination point for visitors from around the country and for significant numbers of travelers from Europe. Creede's historic Main Street is great shopping area. Rare Things is a source of individually crafted and highly-regarded jewelry and antiques and unique finds. For sporting, camping and hiking gear there is San Juan Sports. Art galleries range from contemporary to the studios of renown watercolorist Stephen Quiller, whose classes are much in demand and always filled. Shoppers will enjoy the Amethyst Emporium and The Holy Moses. For those wanting to fish the streams there is the Rio Grande Angler, an Orvis facility, and the Ramble House, a Creede institution since 1946. A visit to Tomkins Hardware is mandatory—it remains virtually as it was 100 years ago.

Fall

The splendor of the fall foliage is backdrop to warm days in September. Some claim fishing in November is the best of any time. Elk season brings hunters. Others come to observe wildlife, enjoy hikes, to paint and to practice photographic skills. The magnificent night skies at this altitude offer unparalleled opportunities for those interested in astronomy. The Creede Repertory Theatre offers a fall season as well.

Winter

Visitors come to Creede for Thanksgiving and for the town's annual Chocolate Festival. Others come for Christmas and the Parade of Lights. Many enjoy Christmas at Wason Ranch with glowing fireplaces and warm cabins. Some families get a permit from the US Forest Service to cut their own fresh Christmas tree. Skiing at Wolf Creek is a favorite activity, though others prefer snowshoeing, snowmobiling or hiking.

Spring
Rainbow trout
Spring break is a favorite time at Wason. Frequently, the Riverside Cottages are full with guests who come back year after year with their friends to enjoy the quality of life, the quality of accommodations and the magnificent scenery. Many who find Creede by accident during this season come back time and again in preference to staying in other nearby places. Spring skiing at Wolf Creek is usually excellent.

In later spring, but before the annual "runoff", there is prime fishing in the streams. Kevin Leggitt of the Rio Grande Angler declares this fishing to be his favorite.

The Taste of Creede Festival over Memorial Day Weekend is the pivotal point between spring and the beginning of the summer season for Creede.
